WHEN ‘THE SOUNDS OF THE WORLD’ ARE MUZZLED BY CENSORSHIP

SCREENING / MEETING in partnership with Les Ecrans du Sud

« What is music for?» sometimes, to give voice to those who are not heard. « What is film for?», no doubt to watch those who are not seen and Jafar Panahi’s films would seem to have been made to answer this question. True to his convictions and his political commitment as an outspoken opponent of the regime, the Iranian filmmaker once again circumvents restrictions in his short film “Hidden”. Hampered by censorship at the time of filming and imprisoned in his country since July 2022, Panahi explores the notion of obstruction and suppression around the figure of a singer with an exceptional voice, who is forced to remain silent. The screening will be followed by a discussion on censorship and prohibition in film and music.

Screening of the short film “Hidden” by Jafar Panahi (2020, 18 mins) followed by a Q & A.
